Although I have not been able to participate as much as I would have liked lately, I have thoroughly enjoyed these seasonal blogs (thanks to Matt and Alison who started the activity with the ukku Spring haiku blog, Dustin for the Summer blog, Gerald and Andrew for the Autumn blog).

I have exchanged emails with Gerald and Paul Mena, and I am delighted to say that Paul has agreed to co-manage the Winter Haiku 2006 blog with me. It will run from the 1st of November 2006 to the 31st of January 2007. Please send an email to me: sbhullar at thehaikupoet.com or paul at haikupoet.com if you would like to join in, and an invitation will be issued. Another Autumn Night

There were no stars; no moonlight in the sky, just a chilly cold breeze slapped my face. Leaves were spreading everywhere on the sidewalk ground. It was after Halloween party. I have to say goodbye to my friends. I went on the bus and the radio was playing my favorite songs. So while on the road, I was bouncing my head and singing to myself.

When I got home, I kept thinking those great nights were best nights of my life. Because I smiled and laugh, bringing wonderful memories to my bedroom.

In the chilly wind
My little humor?..

On the road

Reaching home

Seven miles into town. Day in, day out. You notice the new things. A large piece of cardboard near the big turn. A refrigerator box? Was it going to the dump? Your eyes search the shoulder left, right. To the girls--"Tell me if you see any elk." The rut is well underway. And the new things in the road: things you drive around. Don't want that mess on your tires. Audrey reads. Kate hums to herself. We have, with us, a posterboard cutout of a Sonoran pronghorn. It fills the passenger seat. "You just passed one," Kate says. What? An antelope? "An elk." An elk! I never saw it. I turn up the heater. I'm going to have to start parking in the garage now.

In memory of Yajushi

My heart is heavy with the news that the Indian poet, Yajushi (M Ram Vinodh), passed away on 30th September in Hyderabad, in the company of his family.

Writing collaborative poetry with someone allows you to get to know them is a unique way, and I think this is undoubtedly true of the time that Kala Ramesh and I spent working with Yajushi on our Triparshva renku, The Hawk's Grand Swoop.

That collaboration was dedicated to the memory of Yajushi's mother, who died during the time of our composition, "having lived to see one thousand moons". How very sad that now her son should pass away just a few short months later.

I will treasure my memories of our writing together. Let me remind you of some of his insightful contributions to that renku. First the opening verses:

the winter sun -
its slow rise above
the hawk's grand swoop /Kala

on the corner
men huddle around a fire /Yajushi

From the very start of our writing, I could feel a togetherness among the poets, as we shared a warmth of spirit and emotion, huddled around our fire of mutual companionship.

And how strange it is, when reading over the poem now, how some of the verses seem prescient. These three come at the end of the second movement:

our shadows bend and rise
around the scarecrow /Yajushi

rich and poor
on towers of silence
underneath one moon /Norman

without a thought
the dragonfly floats away /Kala

Farewell, dragonfly! Journey safely, wherever you may be going.

Last Day of September

For the first time in three years I'll be home for the month of October. I wanted to celebrate early. A day early. September 30, noon. I drove out of town on I-17, to the fairgrounds. The fair was a couple weekends ago, but the revelry goes on. At one end of the park, a music festival; the other, bull riding. I strolled between the two, waiting out the hour. At 1 p.m. my daughter would be leaving ballet. "Don't be late, dad."

Fiftymile Mountain

October, and I awake atop Fiftymile Mountain, southern Utah. We hiked up the evening before, up the great east-facing scarp that overlooks the canyons of the Escalante River. No trucks, no ATVs, you can only get here by foot, or horse, or mule. We camp near a spring, water trickling out of a pipe into a trough. There is a cabin. It belongs to Mary ... I don't know her last name, but she ran cattle here for years. Now the mountain is part of a National Monument and she fights the BLM. She's a tough gal. Three husbands. One fell off of his horse on the trail, struck his head on a rock. One she shooed away with a shotgun. The third probably had sense enough to just leave. The cabin is quiet. Aspens are turning gold in fields of sagebrush, an unusual sight. In four days we see two people, father and son, hunting mule deer the old-fashioned way ... walking, in dust-covered Filsons.
